Nigerian menswear has three headline silhouettes — Senator, Kaftan, and Agbada — and each looks best in a different fabric family. Here is a practical guide from our tailoring floor.
Senator
Sharp, tailored, and modern. The Senator suit lives or dies by its fabric drape. Choose Turkish wool or premium wool suiting in navy, charcoal, black, burgundy or deep green. For weddings and formal engagements, look for a subtle stripe or self-pattern. Yardage: 4 yards.
Kaftan
Comfortable, flowing, and often the everyday choice. The best kaftans use premium cotton, light linen, or a cotton-blend suiting that breathes well. Neutrals (white, cream, sky, sage, sand) are timeless; darker colours read more formal. Yardage: 4 yards for a two-piece.
Agbada
The showstopper. The wide-sleeved Agbada has volume, and volume needs body — so you want a fabric with weight and drape. Go with heavy Austrian lace, premium wool, or cashmere-blend suiting. Metallic embroidery on cream or navy is a wedding-day favourite. Yardage: 6 to 7 yards for a full three-piece.
How to pick colours
- Business and formal: navy, charcoal, black.
- Weddings: cream, burgundy, forest green, royal blue, camel.
- Casual and daytime: sky, sand, sage, dove grey.
Fit is everything
Great fabric on a mediocre cut still looks average. Invest in a tailor who measures you standing, sitting, and with arms crossed. Ask for one fitting before final stitching. Your fabric will thank you.
