How to Care for Ankara So the Colours Stay Vivid
Wash, dry, iron, and store Ankara the right way — so your favourite prints look brand new years after you buy them.
Great Ankara is an investment. Care for it well and it rewards you with years of vivid colour, crisp prints, and outfits that photograph as beautifully as the day they were sewn.
1. Wash it cold, wash it separate
The first two washes matter most — that is when excess dye leaves the fabric. Wash Ankara separately in cold water with a gentle detergent. Do not soak. Do not mix with white or light-coloured clothes.
2. Turn it inside out
Whether hand-washing or machine-washing, turn the piece inside out first. This protects the printed side from friction with other items in the wash.
3. Skip the bleach and the harsh detergent
Bleach is death to Ankara. So are strong enzyme detergents. Stick to mild soap. For stains, dab — do not scrub — with a soapy cloth.
4. Air-dry in the shade
Nigerian sun is generous — and it will fade your Ankara if you dry outfits in direct midday sunlight. Dry in the shade, or in a breezy indoor spot.
5. Iron on the reverse
Iron Ankara on medium heat, on the reverse side. If you must iron the print side, place a thin cotton cloth on top of the fabric first.
6. Store it folded, not stretched
Fold Ankara pieces and store them flat in a drawer or wardrobe. Hangers stretch the shoulders of tailored pieces over time. Keep away from damp — humidity is the enemy of long-term print quality.
