One of the most common questions we get from customers is simple: how many yards of Ankara do I actually need? Buy too little and your tailor calls you mid-week; buy too much and you have leftover fabric with no plan. Here is the honest answer, style by style.
The quick answer
- Long gown or bubu: 6 yards
- Skirt and blouse (classic): 4 yards
- Jumpsuit: 5 yards
- Kaftan (women): 4 to 5 yards
- Two-piece co-ord: 5 yards
- Ankara top only: 2 yards
- Men's kaftan set (top and trouser): 4 yards
- Men's Agbada (three-piece): 6 to 7 yards
Why yardage varies
Three things move the number up or down: your height, the design, and the fabric width. Most Ankara sold in Nigeria comes at 44 to 46 inches wide. If you're over 5'10", or your design has flare, ruffles, tiers, or a train, add an extra yard for safety.
Buying for Aso-ebi
For Aso-ebi, always add a buffer to your total order. Between last-minute joiners and one tailor asking for "just half a yard more," a small cushion saves the day. We recommend adding one extra yard for every four Aso-ebi members.
